As an Elevator Constructor, your work will involve modifying, servicing and repairing electric and hydraulic elevators, personnel and man-hoists, moving walkways, stagelifts, escalators and related equipment. You'll also find yourself doing preventive maintenance and analyzing information to fix a variety of problems.
You can get a jump-start on your future career in this trade by checking out construction courses offered at colleges and high schools. These hands-on courses will help you build the basic skills you will use in the construction industry.
Electronic or mechanical training is a definite asset for anyone wishing to enter the trade.

Elevator Constructors work for registered elevator manufacturers and independent firms that contract to install, service and maintain elevator equipment. Most Elevator Constructors work in the city, where there are more tall buildings.
Wage Rate: $33.12 (Base rate, effective Jan. 1, 2010, not including benefits).
In addition to the basic hourly rate employers provide holiday and vacation pay. Employers may also provide other benefits such as group insurance for health, dental and vision care, retirement packages, and training benefits. In total, the value of the benefits can range from 20% to 30% over and above the basic hourly pay rate.
Elevator Constructors work a standard 40-hour workweek, Monday through Friday. Maintenance and service personnel may be on 24-hour call for specified periods of time.
With additional training, you can transfer your skills to an occupation like Electrician, Power Lineman, Ironworker and Millwright.
As with most careers in the construction industry, your skills in this occupation are portable so if you are interested in relocating you can take your skills with you!
